This qualification reflects the role of individuals such as production operators, working in open cut coal or metalliferous mines or quarries, who perform tasks involving a broad range of skilled applications in a varied work context, using some discretion and judgement in selecting equipment, services or contingency measures.
The course immerses participants in core surface extraction operations starting with a firm grounding in workplace safety, risk management and maintain site quality standards. The course then focuses on developing participant skills in a selection of units and operating various plant machinery.
Upon successful completion of this course (qualification), participants will receive a nationally recognised qualification: RII30120 Certificate III in Surface Extraction Operations.
Qualification units and delivery
A total of 13 units are required consisting of three (3) core and ten (10) electives according to the qualification packaging rules. Assessment Methods include Knowledge Assessments, Performance assessments and Calculation assessments. Recognition of prior learning (RPL) options are also available. The following units are delivered by PGC Training to meet requirement of the qualification packaging rules.

Course Duration

Study mode
Face-to-face with a combination of classroom based training and assessment and practical training and assessment.
Learner resources
All learning resources, materials and equipment required for training will be provided by PGC Training for use during the program.
Participants will be required to wear their own steal toe capped boots and bring with them their lunch and drink/s.
Hi-vis vests, safety glasses and hard hats will be provided by PGC Training for the duration of training.

Full fee paying
For students that do not meet eligibility requirements under the Lower Fees, Local Skills initiative, the full cost for the qualification is $9,800.

Course pre-requisites
Course participants:
- must be 18 years of age or over
- must be able to read and write to a basic level of English
- need to have the physical fitness to safely operate machinery
- must provide current, primary and secondary ID
- must have USI number
Language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND)
Student LLND is assessed prior to enrolment. Students must have sufficient language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills to be able to read safety signs and policies and procedures and do calculations. Where LLND is determined to be less than the standard required, students are notified for LLND needs to be addressed.
